A synthetic melanocortin receptor agonist generated from α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, PT-141 (bremelanotide) is intended to work centrally on the brain to affect arousal and sexual desire without relying on vascular mechanisms. Through its impact on oxytocin receptors throughout the brain, oxytocin—a naturally occurring nonapeptide generated in the hypothalamus—plays a crucial role in social bonding, emotional regulation, and affiliative behavior.
